Why taking a break is good for business
If you have attended one of our Global Business Camps before, especially the recent the 2025 GBC Camp at Crowne Plaza Surfers Paradise, you would remember Lead Presenter John Tsoulos talking about the “12 Key Rules to Your Success™” with Rule 4 focusing on “Enjoy Life”.
Rule 4 – Enjoy Life asks you to commit to a work-life balance, to take time out to enjoy what you like doing the most. Have fun both at work and in your private life. And to take holidays – do not keep putting it off…”
John knows first-hand how demanding it can be to run a small to medium business. That’s why, from 25 August to 7 October, he and Helen are taking some well-deserved annual leave. Like many business owners, they’ll still check in from time to time to see how the team is going, but they also understand that stepping back is essential. By giving themselves a proper break, they’ll return with the clarity, energy, and perspective needed to lead their business more effectively—and set a positive example for their team to recharge too.
Running a small or medium business in Australia can feel like juggling flaming torches on a tightrope. There are customers to keep happy, bills to pay, and a team that relies on you to keep things moving. But here’s the thing: even the best jugglers need a breather.
Taking a break isn’t just about relaxing; it’s about recharging your mental, emotional, and physical batteries. It’s good for you, good for your employees, and ultimately good for the health of your business.
Why business owners need to step back
When you’re leading a business, it’s easy to fall into the trap of being “always on.” But studies consistently show that working long hours without a break leads to fatigue, burnout, and poor decision-making
Taking time out – whether it’s a short walk, a weekend away, or even a holiday – helps reset your perspective. You return with fresh ideas, renewed energy, and the ability to make better strategic decisions.
Think of it like servicing your car: you wouldn’t expect it to run smoothly forever without a tune-up. Your mind and body deserve the same care.
Your team needs breaks too
It’s not just business owners who benefit from downtime. Employees who regularly take breaks are more productive, less stressed, and more engaged. Short breaks throughout the day improve concentration and creativity, while longer breaks – like annual leave – help prevent burnout and reduce sick days.
In Australia, we’re lucky to have workplace laws that support paid leave and fair working hours. But creating a culture where people feel encouraged to actually take those breaks makes all the difference.
When employees return refreshed, they bring back not only energy but also a renewed sense of motivation – and that leads to better customer service, stronger teamwork, and a healthier bottom line.
Small steps make a big difference
Supporting wellbeing in your business doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few simple ideas:
- Encourage micro-breaks: Even five minutes away from the screen can help reset focus.
- Model the behaviour: When you take breaks yourself, you give your team permission to do the same.
- Promote annual leave: Make sure everyone is using their holiday entitlements – including you!
- Consider flexibility: Where possible, flexible hours or remote work can help reduce stress and improve work-life balance.
These small actions add up to a workplace where people feel valued, supported, and ready to give their best.
The big picture
At the end of the day, running a business is a marathon, not a sprint. You can’t look after your customers or your team if you’re running on empty. By prioritising rest – for yourself and your employees – you build a stronger, more resilient business that can weather challenges and seize opportunities with energy and clarity.
So go ahead, block out that holiday in your calendar. Your business will thank you for it.
